This all works pretty well, but I run into some limitation that I knew beforehand: MKV's with higher quality audio-streams (like TrueHD, DTS-HD MA etc.) will be unpacked by the client and sent as PCM over the mini's HDMI port (like Infuse did on the Apple TV). Then I figured, I have a spare 2018 (mac) mini, so perhaps I could use that as a dedicated player with the reasonably capable Jellyfin Media Player application as a client for my Jellyfin-based server. I got disappointed with Infuse though, it performs its basic task of playing MKV's reasonably well, but it could be so much more improved (in my opinion) in terms of UI-design and how it interacts with Jellyfin, but the developer seems not to be listening so much to constructive criticism as will be clear when one browses their support forum, so I don't want to pay (it's subscription software) for that anymore. So I switched to having a real server (Jellyfin) and using Infuse as an Apple TV client. (Using iTunes.app as a "server" and the Computers.app on the ATV as a "client".)īut then I figured that using Handbrake to transcode my MKV files took a lot of time (and computer power), so why not using the MKV's directly, with better quality to boot as well, as in no extra lossy transcoding step necessary. I archived them into MKV files (using MakeMKV), then used Handbrake to convert from MKV to mp4 because that seemed the only way to use an Apple TV as a client. As many people did and still do, over the last couple of years I ripped all my DVD's and Blu-ray's for more convenience.
